Bicycle Portraits

Via iGNANT bin ich eben auf ein wunderbares Projekt gestoßen, welches hier im Blog unbedingte Erwähnung finden soll.

Stan Engelbrecht und Nic Grobler haben eine ebenso simple wie geniale Idee in die Tat umgesetzt: sie reisen mit dem Fahrrad durch Südafrika und fotografieren Leute, die ebenfalls mit dem Rad unterwegs sind. In ihrem Projekt “Bicycle Portraits” wird zu jedem Bild kurz notiert, warum der Mensch mit dem Rad unterwegs ist und wozu es in der Hauptsache genutzt wird.

Eine geniale Idee, die zahlreiche Menschen rund um den Globus begeistert – mich eingeschlossen. Auch schön zu lesen: das Vorhaben soll in sozialer wie auch ökologischer Hinsicht von Nachhaltigkeit geprägt sein.

… we want to be able to assist the underprivileged cycling community through our project – be it teaching bicycle maintenance skills, providing necessities like helmets, tires, tubes, locks… It would be great to create a support structure for the people who appear in the book – this could be a trust funded by a percentage from sales of the cover price, or a charity set up in the name of the people who appear in the book etc. Ultimately we want to promote cycling as a means of independent transport to empower the underprivileged, and in fact, to encourage everyone capable to ride a bike as an alternative to driving a car, or even using public transport. We hope that this will lead to the kind of infrastructure development that is designed with all people in mind, not just cars.

Am Ende stellt sich natürlich noch die Frage des Geldes: um das Projekt (welches im Fazit mit der Herausgabe eines Bildbandes gekrönt werden soll) zu finanzieren wird um Unterstützung gebeten. Dafür kann bereits das Buch geordert werden – für $55 ist der interessierte mensch dabei …
